Brain Sour

Summer classes are the bane of youth. No one wants to sit in the hot classroom all day. It didn’t help that the air conditioning wasn’t working. Lucky that half of the school had gone home for the summer. Some of the teachers wanted to faint. Josie rolled her eyes.

“I don’t see the point in this,” she said. She packed up her things and headed to the door. The students looked so confused.

“Where are you going?” one of them asked.

“Home,” Josie said.

“But what about class?” the student asked. The professor looked over her shoulder.

“Self-study for the rest of the day,” I said. “Bye.” And then she was gone. The students all looked at each other. Three more teachers went home early that day. The students who had to be there didn’t look like they were paying attention anyway. Noiz fanned herself in her office.

“Why hasn’t the air conditioning been fixed?!” she whined. She got on her phone and dialed the repairman number again.

“Hello?” she asked. “Uh yeah, I need to check back to when you are coming to fix the air conditioning.” She paused and listened.

“Huh?” she asked. “You can’t fix it today. Well, when can you come?” Noiz listened and frowned.

“Three weeks?” she asked. “Why? You’re swamped?” She sighed and rolled her eyes.

“Fine, whatever,” she said. “I’ll see you in three weeks.” Noiz hung up and groaned. They put her off last week too.

Time seemed to be moving slow in the heat. The open windows helped only a little bit. Many students thought that they were going to die in the classrooms.

“Why are we even here?” Yoko complained.

“You tell me,” Shawn said. As the long day wore on, some of the students started seeing things.

“It’s choking,” Christine said.

“Huh?” Bemmer asked. She pointed to Jun-Jun’s dragon tattoo on her right hip. She wore a short tight black leather skirt that day. Bemmer tilted his head.

“You’re right, it is choking,” he said.

“Should we do something?” Katie asked.

“Like what?” Bemmer asked. The Finnish girl shrugged and shook her head.

“I don’t know. Something,” she said.

The only relief comes when it is lunch time. Some students go off campus to get food. Does the staff do anything to stop them? Why bother? It’s too damn hot to fuss. Lucky for everyone, classes end at one during the summer. That’s great, but it has to go on again until the summer semester ends.

Oh buddy…
