Camera Mission

Katie looked around in a panic. She bit on her fingers as she tapped her foot.

“Oh no,” she said. The Finnish girl pulled out her phone.

“Brooke,” she whimpered. “I messed up! I need your help!”

“What is it?” Brooke asked. “What happened? What did you do?” Katie looked around before putting her hand over the phone.

“I lost something,” she confessed. “And it’s bad.”

“What did you lose?” her friend asked. Katie pressed her lips together. She mumbled something over the phone.

“I’m sorry, what?” Brooke asked. The Finnish girl shut her eyes.

“Sarah’s camera,” she said.

“What?”

“I lost Sarah’s camera!” Katie looked around again. Her heart pounded against her chest. She put her hand to her forehead.

“What?! How the hell did you manage that?!” Brooke asked.

“I don’t know! I had it in my hand a moment ago and then I sat it down somewhere. I think I went off somewhere. When I came back, it was gone.” Katie rubbed her forehead. “Oh, this is bad! Really bad!”

“Okay, calm down,” Brooke said. “I will be right there. Don’t move!”

“Thanks, Brooke!” Katie said. She hung up as her stomach turned.

“Oh no…” she murmured.

Brooke met up with Katie outside of the library. The Finnish girl ran over to her American friend.

“Thank goodness you are here!” she said, hugging Brooke wildly. The other girl shoved her off.

“Okay, okay,” she said. “We need to focus here.” Katie backed up and nodded.

“Right,” she said. “Focus, focus, focus.”

“Good,” Brooke said. “Now where were you last before you called me? Think hard now.”

“I don’t know…” Katie said.

“Think,” her friend said. “Close your eyes and try to picture it.”

“Okay,” Katie said. She closed her eyes and tried to picture it. “I was inside the library.”

“Where in the library?”

The Finnish girl moved her hand upwards. “The third floor media lab, I think.”

“What were you doing there?”

“I think I was helping with editing a film with Sarah.”

“Did she ask you to do anything?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Are you sure?”

“No…” Katie froze and she opened her eyes. “Oh!”

“What is it?” Brooke asked.

“I was looking for a book about dolls around the world,” she said.

“Did you take the camera with you there?”

“Yes. I also took it to the bathroom, the snack lounge, downstairs to the front, back upstairs, and then…” Katie’s cheeks turned bright pink.

“What is it?” Brooke asked. The Finnish girl sheepishly chuckled.

“Well… My honey called me and I had to go outside to take his call,” she admitted, rubbing the back of her head as her face turned redder. Brooke raised her eyebrow.

“And where was this?” she asked.

“The copy room,” Katie said. Brooke frowned and walked into the library.

“Where are you going?” the Finnish girl asked.

“Where else?” her friend asked. “The copy room!” Katie tilted her head.

“You think it’s still there?” she asked.

“Where else would it be?” Brooke asked. She walked through the glass double doors. Katie followed behind with a confused look on her face. Did I really leave it there? Only one way to find out.
