Duty Now for the Future

Aisha’s at it again.

The church is doing community work again. Time to recruit her friends. As predicted, Clyde, Muriel, and Lewis didn’t like it. They groaned when Aisha announced today’s agenda.

“Again?” Muriel asked.

“Can’t we get a rest?” Lewis asked.

“No,” Aisha said. “We can’t give the community rest! They need us!” The other three old biddies groaned and looked up at the sky.

“I can’t take this anymore!” Clyde whined. Aisha clapped her hands together.

“Come on, guys!” she said. “Get up! We’ve got work to do!” Time to plan another escape plan.

Clover had Greg over to help her cook dinner. (Actually, he insisted to help her.) She looked over at him.

“Are you sure that you know what you doing?” she asked.

“Of course!” he said. “I have made simple dishes before. This should be easy.” Clover forced herself to smile.

“Sure,” she said. The whole time, Greg planned on trying to confess to her again. This time, he would get it right. The young man drew in a deep breath.

“Hey, Clover,” he said as they walked into the house.

“Hm?” she asked. Greg gulped.

“I fancy you,” he said in one breath. Clover turned her head.

“Excuse me?”

“I really fancy you! Please be my girlfriend!” Greg had his eyes closed when he shouted this. He opened one eye for a peek. Clover stared at him with a blank expression on her face. Greg’s face turned bright red. Come on, say something!

“Uh…” was all that she said before backing into the house, leaving the door open. Greg’s stomach dropped as he stood there, feeling like an idiot.

To make another excuse plan. What will it be today? Running away wouldn’t work, Aisha would notice right away. No, they had to be discreet about it. Sneak away while their leader was talking with her back turned. Be quiet and make a dash for it.

Just one problem: Clyde and those worn-out boots. Oh yes, what to do about those? Lewis turned her attention to Muriel. Unfortunately, she shrugged and shook her head. The famer sighed and lowered her head.

Looks like another afternoon of sad planning.

Tucker and Annie stood behind the front counter in the Sunny Plum Café. The husband leaned over and sighed. Annie finished up with writing out everything that they needed.

“Tuck,” she said. “I think we need to help Sharon and Dante.” Tucker turned his head and looked at her.

“Why?” he asked.

“Because they are our friends,” she said. “We have to help them in some way.” Tucker dug around in his ear.

“We aren’t needed,” he said. “They’ll sort out their own problems. They always have and they always will.” Tucker sniffed on his finger and wiped on the counter top. Annie smacked him on the shoulder.

“What?” he asked.

“Go wash your hands!” she hissed. “That is gross!” Tucker rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered. He stood up and walked into the kitchen. Annie shook her head as she wiped down the counter with the rug on her shoulder.

Clyde, Lewis, and Muriel looked amongst each other as the time to escape became… now!

When Aisha looked up, her friends were gone once again. She groaned aloud as she rubbed her forehead.

“Not again,” the leader muttered under her breath. Aisha turned to the ladies at her church.

“Excuse me for a moment,” she said, trying to keep her composure together. The leader ran off once again to look for her MIA friends.

They will all do this again tomorrow too.
