Love Monkey

Some men are just losers in love. Dwight is the poster child for this trope. He’s just dorky and hopelessly in love. Look at him. He’s just too awkward to talk to girls. Some of them take advantage at him. Others politely let him down. The poor boy just wants a girlfriend. He goes through several crushes a month.

This time, the lucky lady is named Olivia.

Half-French and half-British, she’s only here for the summer semester. She’s here on a conference, in fact. When Dwight first saw her, he could hear angels singing. He bright blonde hair bounced as she walked. Every guy had to stop and look at her. Her school uniform made her that much more desirable. Dwight just had to have her.

Others, like always, had their doubts.

“Give it up, man,” Soot said. “She’s out of your league.” Dwight bounced around on his feet.

“But I have to talk to her at least,” he said. “If I can do that, I will be a happy man.” Soot gave him a sympathetic smile and patted him on the back. Usually, Dwight would give up at this point. But, something inside of him wouldn’t let him give up.

At first, no day seemed right. Olivia was too busy with her lectures and Dwight had work. It didn’t help that he had to see her every day. Olivia was surrounded by her friends. They looked so happy together with their laughing and talking. He couldn’t help but stare at her as she flipped back her blonde hair. Dwight would stare at her out the window over lunch.

“Think she’s cute?” someone asked behind him. The awkward boy leapt up in his seat. Josie leaned in, giving him a strange look. Dwight blinked at her for a moment.

“Josie?” he asked. The red-haired woman walked over to the window.

“She’s really cute,” she said. “What’s her name?” Dwight broke into blushing.

“Yeah, I guess…” he mumbled.

“Why don’t you go talk to her?” Josie asked. The young man looked at her with big eyes.

“What?!” he asked.

“Yeah,” she said.

“But…” Dwight said. Josie gave him a pouty face.

“You like her, right?” she asked. The young man slowly nodded. The redhead smiled and shrugged.

“Well, why not go over and talk to her?” she asked. “It couldn’t hurt. Maybe you could get lucky for a change.” Dwight raised his eyebrow.

“Is this a joke at my expense?” he asked.

“No,” Josie said. “You won’t know if you won’t go other and talk to them.” Dwight looked out the window. Olivia and her friends sat under the big cherry tree across the street, talking. He could hear the angels singing around her again from the library as she flipped back her hair. Dwight sighed and dropped his shoulders.

“Well… I guess it wouldn’t hurt,” he said. Dwight got up with the table and cleaned up his mess. Josie saluted as he walked by.

“Good luck!” she shouted.

Dwight made down to the street. Three of Olivia’s friends had already left. Time seemed to slow down when she flipped back her hair. The young man blushed as his heart raced. He just had to go over there and say hi at least. Dwight took in a deep breath and jogged across the street.

But then, a tall, buff man his age walked over to Olivia. She stood up and kissed him on the lips. Dwight’s heart sank. There goes another chance at love flying away. Olivia and the other guy looked up to see him standing inches away from them.

“Uh… can I help you?” she asked.

“Uh… Um… Hi….” Dwight said. He turned and ran away. Olivia and the other guy watched him as fled.

“Who was that?” the guy asked.

“I have no idea,” Olivia said.
