Spirits the Material World

It was supposed to be an easy summer day. But, grown children cane make things more complicated. Muriel already had to deal with Tre and Jules.

Lewis awoke to someone pounding on the door. She mumbled to herself as she turned in bed. The knocking grew louder. The farmer gritted her teeth as she pulled her pillow over her head. When the pounding on the door wouldn’t stop, Lewis sat up with the face of an angry demon.

“What?!” she shouted. The farmer jumped out of bed and stormed down to her front door. When she opened it, all of the anger washed away.

“Oh…” she mumbled. Kat stood outside with a heavy, round belly.

“Hello, auntie,” she said. Lewis stood there, blinking.

“What the hell?” was all that came out of her mouth.

Gloria wandered into the Sunny Plum café. Annie and Tucker looked up when they heard the bell over the door ringing.

“Hello?” Gloria said. The couple had to force themselves to smile.

“Oh, Gloria!” Annie said. “Fancy seeing you here. How are you doing?” The older woman broke into a huge grin.

“Just ace!” she said. “I have new boyfriend.” Tucker about dropped the tray he was holding. Annie’s jaw fell to the counter.

“You’re joshing,” she said. Gloria shook her head.

“No,” she said.

“What’s his name?” Tucker asked.

“Marty,” the older woman said. “He’s in his thirties and he’s really cute.” Gloria hummed to herself as she sat down. Tucker and Annie looked at each other rather uneasy.

“You think this is a job?” Tucker whispered. His wife shook her head. He just shrugged as Gloria read over the menu.

Meanwhile, Kat sat on the couch in the living room. Lewis and the other old biddies quietly stared at her from the kitchen.

“How far along is she?” Aisha asked.

“Seven months,” Lewis said.

“‘Er boyfriend dump ‘er again?” Clyde asked. Aisha smacked her in the head.

Ow!” the dirty-looking old biddy said. Lewis shook her head.

“No?” Muriel asked. The farmer sighed.

“It’s another bloke,” she said.

“What?!” her friends shouted.

“I can hear you from in here,” Kat said. Her aunt and friends looked up. The niece had her hands on her knees.

“He was my husband,” she said. Lewis about fell out of her chair.

“Husband?!” she yelled. “When did you get married?!”

“Last year,” Kat said. “We dated for three years before that.” Her aunt tilted her head.

“What happened?” Lewis asked. Kat sighed and rubbed her forehead.

“He was too immature,” she said. She noticed Lewis rolling her eyes. “Relax. I’m not going to stay here long. I am moving in with another mate of mine in the city.”

“And how long are you staying here?” Lewis asked. Kat counted up on her fingers.

“About a couple more weeks,” she said. Her aunt started to nervously laugh. Muriel whistled to herself.

“Oh boy…” she muttered. Everyone looked up when they heard a knock on the door.

“Who is it now?” Clyde asked.

“No idea,” Lewis said. She got up and walked over to the front door for the second time this morning.
