Stars on 45 Medley

Muriel walked up to Tre’s old bedroom door. She took in a breath and pounded on the door.

“Get up!” she shouted. “You have to get a job! Get up now!” Muriel pounded on the door again. She listened for mumbling inside. Muriel took a deeper breath. She gave the door another hard pound. The old biddy finally opened the door. Despite the room being dark, she would see the sheets piled up on the bed under the window. Muriel marched over and smacked the pile as hard as she could.

“Ow!” Tre shouted. He sat up to see his mother giving him a cold look.

“Mum?” he asked. Muriel folded her arms across her chest.

“How long are you going to lay around like this?” she asked. Tre gave her a blank stare.

“Huh?” he asked. Muriel smacked him on the leg.

“Get up right now!” she said. “Get up! Get up! Get up! Get Up!” Her son nearly fell out of his bed.

“Okay! Okay!” Tre shouted. He got up and walked to the bathroom. Muriel shook her head.

“I don’t know how longer I can take of this!” Muriel complained near the creek.

“Why haven’t you kicked Tre out?” Aisha asked. Her friend shook her head.

“He won’t take a hint,” she said.

“It’s your house,” Lewis said. Muriel flopped back onto the grass.

“‘Ow long ya keepin’ ‘im?” Clyde asked. Aisha glared at her.

“A year,” Muriel said. Her friends stared at her with big eyes.

“What?!” they all shouted.

“Yes,” Muriel said. She rubbed her forehead. “I’m stuck here.”

“That’s not good,” Lewis said.

“I know,” the other old biddy wailed. Aisha jumped to her feet.

“That’s it then,” she said. “We will help you.” Muriel looked up frowning.

“I don’t really think…” she said.

“No!” Aisha said. “That’s just not right! He is in his twenties. Juliet is doing better than him. This is not acceptable. It is your house!”

“Well… yeah…” Muriel said.

“Exactly!” the leader yelled. “We’re going over there right now to fix it! Right?” The other three old biddies didn’t look certain about this.

“Right?” Aisha asked again.

“Yes…” her friends mumbled. The leader clapped her hands.

“Great! Let’s get going!” she shouted. All of the color drained from Muriel’s face.

“Wait now?!” she asked.

“Yes!” Aisha shouted. She started to march away from the creek. Muriel, Lewis, and Clyde looked at each other.

“Come on!” the leader yelled, looking over her shoulder. “Get going! We don’t have all day!” The other three old biddies reluctantly got up and followed behind.

Juliet walked up to the Sunny Plum café and pushed open the glass doors. Annie looked up and her mood brightened up.

“Juliet!” she said. “So good to see you again. What can I get for you today?”

“Just a tea please,” Juliet said.

“Coming up,” Annie said. She turned to the kitchen. “Tuck! Get the fresh tea!”

“What fresh tea?” Tucker asked.

“We bought some yesterday!” his wife yelled.

“Where is it?”

“It should be in the cabinet.”

“I don’t see!”

“You should! I put it up there!”

“You sure?”

Annie threw back her head and groaned. “I hope you will excuse me, dear.” She turned and walked back into the kitchen. Juliet tried to peek over for a look.

“Honestly!” Annie shouted. “The tea should be right there!”

“I don’t see it!” Tucker shouted.

“What did you do with it?”

“I don’t know!”

“Honestly!”

“What do you want from me, woman?!”

“To listen to me and do the right thing!”

Meanwhile, Juliet sat nothing and took a seat at the table. Best to wait this one out. She looked at her watch.

The old biddies stood at Muriel’s front door. Muriel walked up with the key in her hand like she was walking up to her execution. She took a deep breath and unlocked the door. When she looked inside, her jaw dropped.

“Oh!” she shouted.

“What is it?” Aisha asked. She pushed her friend aside for a look. Lewis and Clyde had to take a look for themselves. All four old biddies had their jaws to the floor. Tre sat on the couch kissing a dark-haired woman. The couple looked up when Muriel said, “Oh!” Tre about jumped.

“Mum?!” he asked. “What are you doing back so sure?!”
