Storm Day

Storm warning today. Everything will be closed down for the day. Classes are cancelled. Everyone has been advised to stay indoors. The staff are all doing the same. Most of them are sleeping in or working in their homes. Sapphire sat down at her laptop.

“Is anybody here?” she typed in the chat. Why would anyone be in the chat? They didn’t have to be. There were better things to do during the storm. Sapphire looked up when she heard her computer ping.

“Huh?” she asked. She clicked on the notification.

“I’m here,” the message read. Sapphire got to typing.

“Amethyst?” she wrote back.

“Yeah,” the new message read.

“What are you doing on here?”

“I just checking things out.”

“Ah, I see. What is everyone doing today?”

“Not much. I’m just playing video games until the power cuts out. You?”

“I don’t know what I’m doing. How long will this storm last?”

“No idea. Hang on.”

Sapphire looked out her window at the heavy rain pouring outside. It looked like an all-day storm. She had so many plans for today too. Well, that went down the drain. She didn’t want to stay in the chatroom. The Chinese girl looked up when her computer pinged again.

“All day until tomorrow afternoon,” Amethyst typed back. Sapphire’s face dropped.

“Are you serious?!” she typed back.

“Yeah,” her work friend wrote. Sapphire dropped back her head and groaned. Already, the rain made this day feel longer than it should be.

Louise had her own plans ready. She looked through her cabinet of wine. Which one was she going to drink today. It felt like a red wine day. Red wine made her think of the rainy days in New Orleans. She pulled out the bottle and opened it. The woman sank down on the couch and smiled to herself. Sometimes, nature could be nice enough to give breaks like this.

Louise looked out the window with the TV as background noise. She didn’t mind some of her students. Others, she wanted to strangle. Yesterday, her students kept talking about the coming typhoon. She wanted them to shut up, but secretly she hoped that the campus would be closed for the day. The woman deserved this day of wine. She planned to drink until she decided to go back to bed. What else could she do? She didn’t feel like throwing a typhoon party for the apartment complex. She may have been a hard party girl, but she was also getting old too. Maybe after the storm would’ve died down. The woman looked at her wine.

“Hm,” she said. She put the bottle to her lips. Louise finished the first bottle and wandered into the kitchen for her second bottle. How many more would she go through before it was sleepy time?

Meanwhile, Noiz and Mosh were asleep in their beds. They seemed to have the right idea. The couple don’t plan to do anything for the rest of the day. The rain and storm will probably take out the power at some point. But, it doesn’t matter. Everyone is getting a break through this stormy day.
