Walking on the Moon

Summer is here again. Young and old are either working or laying around. Aisha was planning to get the other old biddies into shape. She got up her friends at six in morning at march them around the town.

“Why are we doing this?” Muriel asked in between breaths.

“It’s good for you,” Aisha said.

“Me feet are killin’ mah,” Clyde said.

“It’s because of those old wellies,” the leader said. The greasy old biddy gave her a funny look.

“Heh?” she asked.

“Maybe if you got a job and stopped betting on the horses,” Aisha said. “You would have something going for you.” Clyde narrowed her eyes at her.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked.

“Figure it out yourself,” the leader said. “I’m not going to waste my time explaining to you.” The dirty old biddy clicked her tongue and snorted.

“I think I’m going to be sick,” Lewis complained. Muriel struggled to stay on her feet.

“Keep up, ladies!” Aisha shouted. The other three old biddies groaned.

--------

Clover had just finished taking out the trash when someone came up behind her and playfully covered her eyes.

“Guess who?” a voice asked in a deep, goofy voice. The young woman sighed.

“Greg?” she asked. Her crush let go of her eyes and moved beside her.

“Hi!” he said.

“Yes?” Clover asked. Greg put his arm around the shoulders.

“You doing anything this weekend?”

“No, but Liz is coming home for the summer.”

“When is she due in?”

Clover shut the trash bin. “This Friday.”

“Ah.” He looked up to see his crush walking towards the house. Greg raced over to catch up to her.

“Can I stay for dinner?” he asked. Clover turned and looked at him, rolling her eyes.

“Fine,” she said. He happily hugged on her. His crush sighed and rubbed her forehead. She couldn’t stay mad at him.

---------

The old biddies stopped at the library. Three of them looked like they were going to pass out. Aisha put her hands on her hips and grinned.

“That was a great run!” she said. The leader turned and tilted her head. “Oh come on, it wasn’t that bad.”

“Are you trying to kill us?” Lewis asked.

“You all need to be in shape!” Aisha said. The other ladies groaned.

“You guys are hopeless,” the leader said. Still, she wouldn’t give up on them. This was only the first day of summer, after all. Aisha was determined to make this work.

-----------

Tucker flipped the sign open. The first day of summer would bring in new costumers. Annie was in a good mood herself. As long as everything goes well, this good mood will stay long.

“Tucker!” Annie shouted from the kitchen. “Did you get the sprouts?” Her husband cursed himself under his breath.

“Uh… I’ll be right back!” he shouted. The man slipped out the door before Annie could ask any questions.

“Tucker!” she shouted.

---------

Aisha came up with another idea.

“Ladies, we need to give back to the community!” she said. Muriel, Clyde, and Lewis looked up at her with twitching eyes.

“Why?” Clyde asked. The leader clapped her hands.

“We need to make a difference in this town!” she said.

“Oh come on,” Lewis complained. “You’re already working us to death. What more do you want from us?”

“I just want to go home and I’m hungry,” Muriel said.

“What she said!” Clyde said. Aisha sighed and rubbed her forehead.

“You ladies are hopeless,” she said. But, she still wouldn’t give up on them. That old biddy was going to make them be better people if it killed her. Don’t worry, she would have all summer to get it right.

Maybe…
