Chapter Three:
Sayuri:
She led me
through the woods after we escaped from the crash. I still had my questions for
the girl that predicted said accident.
“Who are you
exactly?” I asked.
My name is Sayuri.
“I got that, but
who are you?”
I can’t really tell you too much about myself until we can get somewhere safe.
I gritted my
teeth. “Can’t you talk with your mouth?” Sayuri turned her head.
I am mute.
“Oh,” I said.
“So where exactly are we going?”
Chicago.
I tilted my
head. “Why there?”
That was the last place that I heard where they were taking him.
She stopped in her tracks and held up her hand.
The hiking trail towards road heading south is the best way out of these
woods.
“How do you know
that?” I asked.
I just saw through all of the woods.
“You can do
that?”
My powers are starting to come back now that the handcuffs are off.
“What all can
you do?”
I’ll show you later. We have to keep moving right now. Don’t let go of my hand.
“Yes, ma’am.” I
had to run as she dragged me through the woods. I couldn’t see if I put my other
hand in front of my face. Sayuri spoke in my mind as if to let me know that she
was still in front of me.
So what did you do?
“I killed a
man.”
Oh…
“I didn’t mean
to do. I panicked and tackled the old man to the floor in that drug store.”
You only robbed the drug store to help Will?
“Did you see
that in my mind?”
Yes.
I smirked at her
back in the darkness. “How do you know if it’s the truth? I could be making it
all up.”
I could see into your heart.
“We
can’t you see into?” I don’t know if I would call her laughing in my
head creepy.
Wouldn’t you like to know?
“I don’t think I
do.” The more Sayuri spoke, the more questions I had for her. Where did this
girl even come from? Where did she get her powers? Who was after her? Suddenly
we came to a stop.
“What’s the
matter?” I asked.
There’s a road up ahead.
“Great. Maybe we
can hitch a ride.”
Think someone will see us?
I shrugged.
“We’ll have to see, I guess.” I ran as Sayuri pulled me along through the woods.
The low branches smacked me in the face.
“Slow down, damn
it!” I shouted. Sayuri ran faster.
We don’t have time! Let’s go! We made it to the road. The
sun hadn’t come up yet and the road looked empty.
What do we do now?
“I guess we
start walking,” I said. “Someone will eventually see us.” I looked further down
the road. “Though, I wish we had better clothes.” Come to think of it, we didn’t
have much of a plan after fleeing the accident. We had no money, no passports,
and nothing else to survive off of. We couldn’t even call anyone without risking
getting caught again.
“How are we
getting to Chicago?” I asked as we started walking down the road.
What do you mean?
“We don’t have
anything and we could be re-arrested. Do you even know where your brother is in
Chicago?”
I will know where we close and my powers are fully restored.
“And how long
will that take?”
Days. Weeks, maybe.
I sighed,
pressing my hand to my forehead. “Unbelievable.” I turned and looked behind me.
“Look, you need to learn how to survive without using your powers all of the
time.”
What?
I was about to
open my mouth when bright headlights blinded. I shielded my eyes as they got
closer. Sayuri threw up her arms, trying to flag them down. The owner of the
lights, a truck, pulled up to a stop. I stepped beside Sayuri as the door
opened.
“Need a ride?” a
man’s voice asked. Could Lady Luck be in a good mood today?
“Yeah!” I
shouted.
“Hop on!”
I felt like flying into the dark sky. “Thanks.” I grabbed Sayuri by the hand and rushed around to the back of the truck.
