Rocket to Russia
Lewis can’t take this anymore. Kat had stayed here for most of the summer.
Nothing had changed in the days she left her boyfriend and her aunt couldn’t
take it anymore.
“Oi, Kat!” she shouted. Her niece looked up from the couch.
“Yeah?” she asked. Lewis poked her head into the living room.
“When do you plan on going home?” she asked. Kat gave her a puzzled look.
“Hm?” she asked.
“When are you going home?”
“Home?”
“Yes, when are you leaving?”
“Oh, I’m not.”
Lewis gave her a strange look. “Pardon?”
Kat sat up in the couch. “Don’t you know?”
“What?”
“I’m going to move in with you.”
Lewis’ jaw dropped. “No!” Kat tilted her head.
“What’s the matter, auntie?” she asked. Lewis’ arms flared up and down.
“No!” she shouted. “No, no, no, no!” Lewis walked out of the living room,
shouting.
---------
“I can’t take this anymore!” Lewis complained to the old biddies in the Sunny
Plum. “If I have to come home to say her again, I’ll…!” Muriel patted her on the
arm.
“Calm down,” she whispered. Lewis took in a deep breath.
“Have you tried talking to her?” Aisha asked. The farmer cut her an odd glance.
“What?” she asked.
“You know,” the leader said. “Helping her get back with her boyfriend.” Lewis
narrowed her eyes at her.
“Go on…” she said.
Aisha took a sip of her tea. “Well, why did they break-up?”
Lewis tried to think of a reply. “I don’t know.”
“Does she talk about him at all?”
“No?”
“Does she still love him?”
“I don’t know.”
Aisha tilted her head, blinking. “Did she tell you
anything?” Lewis shook her head.
“I have been busy trying not to hear her whining,” the farmer answered. Aisha
frowned.
“See? This is where your problem—” she began to say. She was cut off by a loud
slurp. Aisha glanced at her rather coldly.
“Do you mind?” she asked. Clyde looked up at her.
“Wha?” she asked. Aisha shook her head, frowning.
“You have no tact whatsoever,” she muttered. Clyde shrugged and slurped her tea
again. Aisha gritted her teeth and tried to take the cup out of her hand.
“Oi!” the dirty old biddy snapped as she tried to snatch it back. Muriel looked
away as Lewis cleared her throat.
“Can we get back on track here?” she asked. “I still need to reclaim my home
here. Help me out!” Aisha took a drink of her tea.
“I don’t know what to tell you,” she said. “Just go talk to your niece.” The
farmer frowned at her.
“Do I have to?” she complained.
“Do you want her at your house forever?” Muriel asked. All of the color drained
from Lewis’ face.
“No way!” she shouted. “I’m going to fix it right now!” The farmer rose from the
table and stormed out of the café.
“Who’s paying who tab then?” Annie asked from the counter. The other two old
biddies were quick to point to Aisha. The leader groaned and rolled her eyes.
“Fine,” she mumbled, getting out her wallet.
--------
To Lewis’ surprise, she came home to see Kat packing up in her room. A puzzled
look came over the farmer’s face.
“Kat, what are you doing?” she asked. Her niece looked up at her with a huge
grin on her face. Lewis didn’t know whether or not to panic.
“Brad called!” Kat cheered. Lewis raised an eyebrow at her.
“Brad?” she asked.
“My boyfriend!”
“Okay…”
Kat clapped her hands together. “We’re getting back together!” Lewis narrowed
her eyes at her.
“So… you’re leaving?” she asked.
“Yes!” her niece cheered. It took seconds for the news to reach Lewis’ brain. A
huge grin spread across her face.
“When do you leave?” she asked.
“In the morning,” Kat answered.
“Should I help you pack?”
“If you want to.” The women spent the rest of the
afternoon and evening packing up Kat’s things for her morning departure. The
whole time, Lewis celebrated in her head.
Yes! I’m finally free! I’m free! I’m free!
